About Beijing
|
Beijing is an elegant and graceful city, bustling with life and rich in tradition. With a population of ~ 14m the Chinese capital offers the visitor some of the world’s best-known and most breathtaking historical sites, such as The Forbidden City and The Great Wall of China, but at the same time, caters to international tastes in dining, entertainment and shopping. The thriving city of Beijing is truly a study in contrasts. With its wide avenues and spacious parks, Beijing can appear vast and grandiose; but take a stroll around a marketplace or down one of the city's back streets, the narrow alleyways known as "hutong," and a world of ancient customs, sights and smells is revealed - stalls of mysterious herbal remedies and aromatic teas, woks sizzling with exotic food, and warm people who will welcome you into their lives. A modern metropolis that is steeped in history, it's not hard to discover why this imperial city is one of the world's most fascinating destinations.
The Temple of Heaven is one of Beijing's most popular attractions. The Ming Emperor, Yongle built it as the location for imperial sacrifices performed on the winter and summer solstices. The grounds of the temple were designed in strict accordance with numerology and fengshui. In fact, the four gates mark the four points on a compass. |

| By Taxi It's very easy to hail a taxi anywhere in Beijing. Taxi is the preferred transportation choice for most foreigners, because they are inexpensive and plentiful. The taxi charges 10RMB for the first tour within 3 kilometers and 2RMB thereafter per kilo. The bridge and road tolls will be paid by passengers. For a journey that takes longer than 10 kilo or running after 23:00, the fares will be charged at 50% more. Ensure that the driver starts the meter. You can ask for a receipt which will have the number of the taxi printed on it. This handy in case of complaint. Most drivers can't understand English, so write down your destination in Chinese beforehand. |
